Maisen, Jingumae まい泉神宮前

I finally visited Maisen early enough to avoid the increasingly long lines of locals and tourists at their headquarters in Jingumae. Maisen is famous for the deep fried pork cutlet which the Japanese call tonkatsu. The building is surprisingly large and can accommodate a large crowd every day in it's old-fashioned canteen-style rooms.

If you haven't tried tonkatsu before, be careful as it is highly addictive and highly fattening.

Maisen's tonkatsu is very basic, and nothing to write home about -- except that it is really the perfect example of its genre. This is the real thing, and amazing value for under 1,000 yen for either the 'ros' or the 'hire' set which also comes with cabbage, miso, pickles, rice and tea. You can also get free refills on the rice and cabbage.
